We’re looking for a Mid/Senior UI Designer with a passion for turning complex problems into beautiful, accessible and easy-to-use interfaces.

In this role, you are someone who sweats the details and can spot an incorrect border radius from a mile away. You can spend hours discussing the nuances between Grey-400 and Grey-300. You’re able to balance the fine intricacies between pure delight and function. Does auto layout, variants and design tokens sound like a good time to you? If so, this is the right role for you!

We are on an ambitious journey to establish a Design System for our market-leading enterprise product, Cargowise One. This vast and powerful platform is the backbone of logistics operations for some of the biggest freight forwarding companies around the globe. As our Mid/Senior UI Designer, you will have the unique opportunity to make your mark on a product that has a significant real-world impact.

Unless you’ve worked in logistics before, you will probably have never heard of WiseTech Global, or our main product, Cargowise. We’re a market leader in providing software solutions for the leading players in the domain of global logistics, with customers like FedEx, DHL, Toll, UPS, and many more. Such a deep and complex domain requires solutions that can handle massive scale, allow for extreme customisations, and strive for maximum task efficiency at all times. Our users are educated experts who spend most of their working hours in our software and know how vital the integrity of the data is.

We’re growing our dedicated Design System team in our pursuit to deliver the best user experience for our customers while understanding the necessity of task efficiency and the careful trade-offs this requires them to make. It’s okay if this domain is new territory for you - our Design Principles may not be very familiar to you, but the challenges you’ll have to tackle are fascinating, rewarding, and most likely something you have never encountered before!

The new WiseTech Global multi-brand Design System will be the central hub for all our applications and brands. It will provide tools, support, and education to enable our Product, Design and Engineering teams to build cohesive and modern applications.

What does the work look like?

CargoWise is not just a piece of software; it’s an operating system for the global supply chain. And as such, it’s a complex, enterprise-scale tool for expert users. This means that the Design System we’re creating is not a run-of-the-mill consumer centric one. We have to solve tough use cases in highly efficient ways, while treating the deep complexity and high level of customisability as key reasons why our big customers choose our software. There are not many systems out there that we can learn from, many of our challenges require exploration and pioneering before they are fit for purpose. We are truly breaking new ground here in many ways!

Our Design Team follows the hub and spoke model: UX Designers are embedded in the business units (the spokes) to work with their teams on product challenges. Specialised UI & UX Designers work on the growing Design System (the hub) to enable the embedded Designers to solve those challenges.

You will join a dedicated team and play an important part in evolving our new visual design direction - turning complex and difficult UI challenges into functional, efficient, and easy-to-use components, patterns and layouts. You will work closely with our dedicated Engineering team on a cohesive delivery of our component library. And you will support our embedded Designers by providing guidance, feedback, and support for their work to ensure the correct usage and implementation of the Design System.

You will need to be an expert in Figma and enjoy sharing your knowledge and skills in this tool with the broader Design team. You will always be on the lookout for ways to grow, improve and iterate our system and our applications.

There are also many other creative design challenges outside of the Design System where you can lend a helping hand from time to time.

A bit about who you are

  • You have 3-5+ years of experience in user interface design and prototyping of responsive applications for the web, both mobile & desktop, in a product or agency environment.
  • You are a passionate Design advocate with outstanding visual design & interaction design skills and enjoy being an active contributor to our Design culture and practices.
  • Design Systems are not a new thing to you - you might have either used them in the past or contributed to one yourself
  • You enjoy collaborating with other Designers, Engineers and Product Managers, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • You live and breathe Figma and are able to help and guide less experienced users to unlock its full potential
  • You understand the concepts of current front-end technologies

Don’t meet all of those requirements? That’s okay - if you’re a UI Designer with a passion for all things Design Systems, please reach out!

Other skills that help but are not required

  • Good writing skills to support our documentation
  • Solid knowledge of A11y and best practices
  • You don’t just understand it, but you’re confident around code and might have built something in HTML, SASS, JavaScript or VUE.

Some other things you might want to know

Our Design team is still relatively young but growing fast, both in numbers and influence. You’ll be joining a team of passionate, diverse and talented Designers, and you’ll be playing an active part in shaping our Design culture. There are many decisions that we still need to make together, and your prior experience will help us overcome future obstacles.

We’ve made sure that there are clear pathways for our Designers to progress in their careers that are personally supported by our Head of Design and endorsed by the wider business.

We’re a hybrid working environment - at the moment, the Design team meets up once per fortnight in our Alexandria office in Sydney (but this can change in the future). We have a bunch of team and company-wide social events; such as Global Cake Day where Richard White updates us on company news, new starters lunch on Tuesday, and wellness Wednesdays.
